Why Obama?

One of my Facebook friends who lives in Sweden asked me the other day, “Why Obama? I have just ordered one of his books as I’m yet to be convinced. I’m still for Clinton, but I’m intrigued by Obama. Not that I can vote for either, but politics excites me sometimes and this has drawn me into the whole American nomination process which I’ve never been interested in before.”

Why Obama? Because he’s brilliant. I find that his words, his ambitions, and his actions to date inspire me. Like you, I’ve never taken an interest in American politics before. I didn’t even know the difference between Republicans and Democrats (and couldn’t care less) until the appearance of Barack (and his lovely wife, Michelle).

As for Mrs Clinton, I find her insistence that privilege and pedigree make her the right person for the job more than a little patronizing, not to mention slightly fascist, and certainly pro-establishment or the old-guard (and we know what they’ve been like over the generations). I liked her husband as president before he started using race as a reason not to vote for Obama, but she always struck me as a self-seeking, power hungry b**** (excuse my French).

Anyway, I really can’t understand why African Americans wouldn’t want to vote for a more than capable president in their own image. It would do their PR no end of good as well as encourage other little black boys and girls to dream of some day becoming president of the world’s foremost superpower.

Barack Obama is the best hope America has right now for a president that the rest of the world can believe in. I read with great interest his Dreams from My Father and wept with recognition at the “skinny kid with the funny name” in me. I may not be able to vote in the US presidential elections, or even donate to his immaculate campaign (I’ve tried), but I’ve never been more interested in the political process happening anywhere in the world than right now. I believe that - Yes We Can!
